SCULPTING IN SOUND

An artistic practice.

We will work with the understanding and feeling that sound is a volatile and at the same time a physical material that we can shape in different ways.

You learn to use sound as a way of musical expression and as a medium. By sound, I mean that we use real sound (all possible sounds that surround us) as musical material

Sculpting in Sound has the whole world as inspiration and is not limited by narrow understandings of genre.

During the 5 modules you will be introduced to the basic ideas and techniques of working with sound as a creative/artistic means of expression. And you get continuous feedback on your sound work.

I show you how to record different sounds and atmospheres, and how to work from your own sound library with a sound work, soundscape,

sound composition.

SCULPTING IN SOUND

The art of recording and composing with sound.

Sculpting in Sound is for you who are interested in working with creative processes and sound as a means of artistic expression.

We will we artistically investigate, explore and approach a sonorous and sonically ambient mind/ear setting.

It involves a way of interacting with our sonorous surroundings that renounces the typical logic of what we like and dislike, foreground and background on which our daily and aesthetic lives rest.

Instead, the ambient mind setting is an inspiring and

energetic state of awareness where we align with the 'all-around-everywhere' sonorous materiality of our surroundings.

No prior knowledge of sound, software or technology is required, but a willingness to be creative and exploratory with sound and expression.

All you need for this course is a (handy)sound recorder, a computer, a multi-track recording/editing program, no prior knowledge is necessary.

The course may also be of interest to visual artists, illustrators, architects, photographers, writers, etc., who are interested in broadening and perspective their creative field.

What do you learn on the course?

In this course you will learn how to express yourself through sound. You will explore and find your own unique sound expression/language.

You will get a new experience of sound, and the creative materiality of sound and the soundscapes that surround you, through an approach that is both practical and philosophical.

A sound composition is much more than cutting and pasting in an editing program – it's a way to bring creativity into your world, thoughts and feelings. It can be an life-changing experience.

We go into your creative engine and find the driving force behind your creative power.

You will experience how to overcome project limitations and transform obstacles into something creative.

If you are thinking of buying a soundrecorder (handy recorder), or advice on audio editing program, write to me at mail@weingaarde.com before the course starts, and I can give you some advice.

MODUL 1

We will talk about sound, feeling and personal sound expression, film, theatre, soundscapes and sound installations and what it means to create your own sound library.

A sound library is a kind of sound room. A concentrated gathering place for sound.

We will talk about location, finding a sound location, and listening (before recording) to the soundscape you are in; sound, awareness and sound presence.

A Soundscape is like a point in a system with three coordinates: the specific place, the specific time, the specific human.

And we will talk about.how to use the recorder as an instrument.

MODUL 2

We work based on the idea that sound is location-specific, that each location has its own sound. And  seek out and record the sound of the place, take it into the studio/computer and have a deep listen to it as it is, or mix it with sounds from other places, and we are left with a kind of imaginary soundscape, i.e. we sonically create a place that we have never heard before.

We will talk about audio compositional qualities such as texture timbre, effects, note transitions and what constitutes an audio score.

You start putting sounds together for a sound composition. We will talk about key elements such as shape, space, movement, texture, rhythm, balance, asymmetry.

In sound work it is important to be aware of these concepts and use them to create a unique expression.

MODUL 3 - 4

We will listen, review and work on your audio material/sound liberary, so far.

A.We will work creatively with your audio material, with the sound as means of an experience of the outside world, pushing the recording beyond its mimetic and documentary character.

B.We will also work with field recordings as unmanipulated, recorded sound that is so ear-openingly interesting and worth listening to that just playing it can be enough in itself.

As such, the modules are a sort of guiding framework. If there are or appear wishes and interests from the participant, we adapt the modules accordingly.
